Your eyes are so extremely important to you and if you are like most people, you probably don't give them much thought. You should educate yourself on some basic eye care tips, as well as popular treatments for common conditions. The better educated you are on eye care, the better you will do at making sure you decrease your risks of certain problems. Here are some basics you should be aware of:

What you eat can help your eyes – It is true that certain foods will help you to maintain better eye health. While most people know about carrots, they don't realize that other foods like green leafy vegetables like kale, certain seafoods such as salmon and other foods can also help their eyes.

You should put on sunglasses when you put sunscreen on your skin – When you are going into the daylight and you put on that sunscreen, you should also put on a pair of sunglasses with UV protection. If you don't have this type of sunglasses, any type is better than not wearing any at all. If you wear prescription glasses, you can have a UV protectant tint put on the lenses.

You want to be extremely careful with everything that gets near your eyes – Touching in or around your eyes with unwashed hands can lead to eye infections or other illnesses. Using old, used or borrowed eye makeup can transfer germs that also cause illnesses or infections.

You should have an eye exam even when you think your eyes are perfect – You may think there is nothing at all wrong with your eyesight because vision problems can come on so slowly that you don't see the difference. However, routine eye exams may surprise you and you may learn you need corrective lenses.

You may have other options available to you – If you do find out you have vision problems, you may have more choices available to you than you realize. You may be able to go with glasses, contacts and even Lasik eye surgery. Having options allows you to go with the type of corrective treatment you feel the most comfortable with. You can even go with glasses and contacts, this way you can put your glasses on when you feel like it, or pop in your contact lenses when you want to wear them. Lasik eye surgery should take away the need for these other options.
