4 Ways To Take Care Of Your Eyes Following Lasik Surgery

Posted on: 18 March 2018

After you have Lasik surgery, you want to make sure that you take careful care of your eyes. In the days following your surgery, you are going to want to be careful around your eyes. After all, your eyes just underwent a major surgery.

1. Stay Away from Screens

When you are on bed rest, one of the most natural things to do is to enjoy a movie marathon or just spend the day spacing out on your computer. However, after you have Lasik, you should not look at any screens for the first day at least following your surgery. Even after that, you are going to want to limit your screen time.

To entertain yourself after your surgery, download some audio books to listen to or some podcasts. You can download educational podcasts or more entertaining podcasts. There are entire podcasts series dedicated to true crime, for example. Load up your MP3 player with lots of audiobooks, podcasts, and music to listen to.

This could also be a good time to make some phone call and catch up with your friends and family.

2. Do Not Rub Your Eyes

This may be the hardest direction to follow. You should not rub your eyes following your surgery. You are going to want to avoid rubbing your eyes for the next few weeks. That basically means touching your eyes, which can be hard to do.

If you are a frequent eye toucher, work on not touching your eyes and breaking this habit in the weeks leading up to your surgery. This will help you break this habit before you have your surgery.

3. Wear Sunglasses Outside

It doesn't matter it if is sunny outside or cloudy, in the month following your surgery, your eyes are going to be particularly delicate, and you don't want to expose them to the sun's ultraviolet rays. Put on sunglasses whenever you go outside. Invest in a pair of polarized sunglass for the ultimate in visibility and protection.

Even after the first month passes after your surgery, it is a smart idea to continue to wear sunglasses year-round whenever you leave the house.

4. Stay Away from Water

You need to be careful around water after your surgery. Wait at least an entire day before you take a shower. When you do take a shower, keep the water off of your face and away from your eyes for the week following your surgery.

For the first month following your surgery, stay away from swimming pools, hot tubs, and saunas. Try to keep your eyes away from water, and all the chemicals inside of swimming locations, for the first month following your surgery.

Take special care of your eyes after your Lasik surgery to ensure that they heal up properly. Avoid screens after your surgery, and limit your screen time after that as well. Put on sunglasses when you go outside, regardless of if it is sunny or not or the time of year. Limit your exposure to water, and follow any additional Lasik recovery directions that your doctor has provided you with.
